HHC/BDL Digital Experience
Digitally Transforming an Airport Terminal to Add Life and Local Flavor for Travelers
Client: Hartford HealthCare (HHC)
Location: Bradley International Airport (BDL)

The Challenge
To seize an opportunity to connect with an audience of more than
6 million people per year, Hartford HealthCare (HHC) wanted to create a memorable digital experience that would welcome and inspire travelers departing and arriving through Bradley International Airport.
The goal was to create a dynamic, high-impact projection experience within the airport’s busiest terminal corridor that reminds audiences who are transiting the airport of the health system's powerful brand presence and deep commitment to communities throughout Connecticut. The medium is also the message in the sense that the technology employed to present this wonderful visual display reflects on the HHC’s position as an innovative leader in healthcare.
HHC’s original commitment to the airport terminal expanded from
one year to three. It was imperative that the solution be able to accommodate frequent, if not seemingly spontaneous changes
to the projected content.

The space presented unique challenges:
-
The impression needed to be BIG! The experience would need to dominate a wall space 100’ wide by 13’ high.
-
No LED walls or direct-mount displays were feasible due to architectural and structural constraints.
-
Ambient light and passenger movement required very high-lumen projection and precise edge-blending.
-
Airport security rules demanded special installation logistics, escort protocols, and after-hours work windows.

Our Approach
Quast Media designed a custom multi-projector edge-blend solution, creating a seamless 55-foot-wide digital canvas.
Using four Epson 16,000-lumen projectors, our team engineered a pixel-perfect visual experience powered by Quast Media’s QMS (Quantent Management System) — allowing Hartford HealthCare to manage and schedule custom content remotely.
Our process included:
-
3D site mapping and projection studies
-
Ceiling blocking design and custom mounting
-
Edge-blend calibration and alignment
-
Specialized wall treatment using high-gain projection paint
-
Secure after-hours airport installation and calibration

The Experience
When travelers pass through BDL’s concourse, they’re greeted by a vivid, motion-driven story highlighting the Connecticut communities Hartford HealthCare supports and maintains
a significant presence in.
The content theme (at launch) features classic, nostalgia themed “travel postcards” that rotate
in and out over a 2D airport themed background.
As the postcards animate through rotation, the illustrations within the postcards also animate creating a multidimensional effect.
-
“Postcards from Connecticut” celebrating local destinations and landmarks
-
HHC branding is integrated with natural imagery and animation

The result is a captivating digital mural that turns a mundane airport corridor into a lively, visually stimulating, and informative experience.
“We wanted something that felt alive — a visual experience that made travelers feel that Hartford HealthCare is a constant, supportive and reassuring presence in the life and well being of Connecticut residents—coming and going.”
— Vinnie Quast, Co-Owner & CEO, Quast Media LLC
